At Professional Home Care Services, Inc., we’re passionate about helping seniors age with dignity and independence in the comfort of their own homes. We see firsthand the vital role that personal care services play in improving quality of life for our clients. However, there’s a significant gap in coverage that leaves many seniors struggling to afford the care they need.

The Current Situation: A Patchwork of Care

Currently, Medicare covers a range of home health services, such as skilled nursing, physical therapy, and occupational therapy. But it does not cover personal care services – assistance with activities of daily living like bathing, dressing, grooming, and toileting.

This means that many seniors who require help with these essential tasks are left with limited options:

  • Medicaid: Medicaid does cover personal care services, but it’s a needs-based program with strict income and asset limits. This leaves out a large group of middle-income seniors who don’t qualify for Medicaid but can’t afford to pay for personal care out-of-pocket.
  • Private Pay: Paying privately for personal care can be extremely expensive, quickly draining savings and putting a strain on families.
  • Family Caregivers: Often, family members step in to provide personal care. While this is a loving gesture, it can place a significant burden on caregivers, impacting their own health and well-being.

The Need for Change: Expanding Medicare Coverage

Adding personal care services to the Medicare home health benefit would be a game-changer for seniors and their families. Here’s why:

  • Improved Quality of Life: Personal care services help seniors maintain their independence, dignity, and overall well-being.
  • Reduced Hospitalizations: By providing support with daily tasks, personal care can help prevent falls, medication errors, and other issues that can lead to hospitalization.
  • Cost Savings: Investing in preventive home-based care, including personal care, can ultimately reduce healthcare costs by preventing more expensive hospital stays and nursing home placements.
  • Support for Family Caregivers: Expanding Medicare coverage would provide much-needed relief for family caregivers, allowing them to balance their own lives while ensuring their loved ones receive the care they need.

Taking Action

We believe that all seniors deserve access to the care they need to live comfortably and safely at home. We urge policymakers to expand Medicare coverage to include personal care services.

What You Can Do:

  • Contact your elected officials: Let them know that you support expanding Medicare to cover personal care services.
  • Spread the word: Talk to your friends, family, and community about this important issue.
  • Support organizations: Advocate for seniors by supporting organizations that are working to improve access to home care services.

Together, we can make a difference in the lives of seniors across the country.
